About Us

In 2016, the Food Pantry Garden was started to serve those in our area who did not have access to fresh produce. We try to give away 95% of everything we grow to the community. 

When the garden started, it operated like a CSA, people signed up for bags of produce at the beginning of the season and would come to the garden on Sundays to pick up their bags.  During the pandemic, we were unable to get together volunteers to wash and pack the bags, so we moved to a pick-up style and invited people to come directly to the garden.  The first year of the pandemic we had several people, but the next year that trickled down to very few.  In addition, after the pandemic, volunteers did not return so readily to the garden, so in 2022, we moved to partner with local organizations that do food distribution.

We are now partnered with Mission Southside, https://missionsouthside.org/, and the City of Shawnee Community Center and we make two deliveries of our produce to those organizations weekly during the growing season.  We continue to look for ways to improve our distribution model. We have been a City of Shawnee Community Center community garden partner for several years and in 2021, we also partnered with The Giving Grove to add an orchard to our site. The orchard is now open to the community to pick what they need!

In 2023, Kansas City Community Gardens facilitated a partnership with the City of Shawnee that resulted in a grant that provided a new garden shed and nine new rental beds, bringing our total to 18 beds. One of the ways we serve the community and raise a little money for the garden is by providing low-cost rental beds for anyone in the community.

Rent-a-Bed!

We offer rental beds for those who need a space to grow their own food. We have 18 rental beds in total, 9 of those are 4x10 ft and rent for $25 a season and the other 9 are 4x8 ft and rent for $20 a season. Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteer season generally goes from April to November, depending on the weather. Volunteering is an opportunity to help our garden and help grow produce for the community and those in need. Anyone can volunteer in the garden, we have jobs for all skill levels–no gardening experience is needed! We can teach volunteers everything they need to know. Any groups looking for ways to accumulate community service are welcome! We have also been blessed by youth organizations looking for projects, please contact us for ideas if you need a project!
