From Our Pastors

The following are responses from our pastors to questions that have been asked us via text, email, or in person. If you have a question you would like answered on this page, let us know here (questions will always be presented here anonymously).

"Were you saying in your sermon that John 14:26 is not for believers today?"

Answer: I do think it was specifically for the disciples. After his resurrection he would remind them all that they had seen and heard (John 2:22). He would "teach them all things" so that they would be the ones who would carry the teaching of Jesus forward, write Scripture, and lay the foundation of the Jesus movement (Eph. 2:20). I see this a really carried out in Paul's words in 1 Cor. 2:13 when he claimed to speak with words "taught by the Holy Spirit."

"Is the 'one who has bathed' (Jn. 13:10) a reference to belief? Or perhaps ceremonial washing for the festival?"

Answer: Jesus mentions that all the disciples were "clean," with the exception of one, a reference to Judas. The disciples were "clean" before Jesus washed their feet. Jesus explains their clean-status as accomplished by the message he preached to them (John 15:3), not by ceremonial ritual. Jesus tended to look beyond ceremonial issues to the matters of the heart, whereas the religious leaders focused on ceremonial conformity.
